Commissioning engineer (Switchgear)

North West and North East England

The Role

In this role you will be required to perform installation, commissioning offloading, modification/refurbishment, maintenance, system testing and fault diagnosis, servicing and modifications on a range of LV and HV Switch gear and electrical distribution equipment up to 33KV. The role will require you to work on a number of different substations, nuclear and military sites. This will involve traveling to a number of different sites located around the Midlands and also some international work on occasions (although international work is optional).

# Perform site risk assessments and assist in producing method statements.
# Document test results and produce site work reports.
# Contribute to the formulation of offers for site activities.
# Participate in necessary schemes to provide cover outside of normal working hours.
# Assist with works tests when necessary.
# Contribute to customer training activities.

You will be responsible for conducting pre visits to site to assess access requirements and complete risk and method statements so the installations are completed efficiency and smoothly. Each role will, be different and so often you will be working in small teams although on occasion some of the work will be carried out independently. You will help put together a list of materials which will be needed to complete the jobs, while also completing and creating the necessary paperwork and reports using laptops and tablets provided. The role comes with training and once you up to speed you will be responsible for also training customers how to use the new switchgear and associated machinery they have purchased. The nature of the role also includes the requirement for you to be on an on call rota 1 week in four and so will need to attend site if an emergency arises. While on site you may be required to look after a number of subcontractors or junior engineers.

The Candidate

The ideal candidate for this role will be a timer served engineer who has previously worked within energy distribution and switchgear. We are looking for switchgear commissioning engineers who are focused on giving the highest levels of service and professionalism. We are looking for an all-rounder engineer who has strong electrical and mechanical knowledge and has good experience with voltage up to 33KV. Of course any engineers with experience in either low, medium or high voltage + switch gear would be warmly welcomed. Candidates who have previously worked with leading suppliers to the national grid including working on their substations with switchgear and electrical distribution equipment we would very much like to speak with. We have a number of roles for commissioning engineers so if you know anyone who would be interested please recommend them as we pay good referral fees. Qualifications are a nice to have so anyone with a C&G level 3, HNC or ideally HND are encouraged to apply but above all experience in this type of work is the key. Candidates need to be flexible to staying in digs during the week as projects are likely to last a couple of days or more at a time. There are opportunities for work abroad but this is optional and comes with the bonus of increased overtime pay.

The holder will be experienced in the principles of:

High Voltage Testing (415v - 33kv systems)
CT Magnetisation Curves
CT Primary Injection
Relay Secondary Injection (Both electro mechanical and 'PSL' relays)
VT Primary Injection
Control Circuit Wiring testing
Mechanical/Electrical function testing of 415v - 33kv switchboards & networks
