Job Description

We are currently looking to recruit a Network based technical support manager for our client who are based in Newcastle Upon Tyne. This role is essentially a newly created position and they are looking to recruit a senior level technical candidate who will be able to look at the current technical datacommunications solution and to devise and introduce enhancements to the technology to make the network more efficient and cutting edge.

This role is sitting at the final tier of technical support and 1st / 2nd line issues will be handled by the service desk. A key aim of this role will be to investigate existing fault tickets and identify, through root cause analysis what is causing the technical problem, and what needs to be done to remedy the problems going forward.

This is a 365/24/7 support environment although it is not a shift based or on call style role - you will just need an element of flexibility to deal with senior level network based issues (Within reason) when they happen.

Key technical skills will be a detailed design level knowledge of IP networks, along with IP VPN technology and virtual network / server technology.

Operating in the maritime communications industry, our client provides support for satellite data and voice services to vessels at sea, and the support function has responsibility for;
* Supporting our proprietary software messaging clients
o E-mail (including management of mailboxes)
o SMS
o Web browsing
o Virtual fax
o Instant messaging
* Handling customer trouble tickets relating to satellite communications
* Supporting new customer installations
* Assisting with customer sales presentations
* Management of their communications network

Now due to the ever changing nature of maritime communication industry, we are looking for an exceptional individual who can come in to this new role with a wealth of ideas. Our client currently have exceptional professionals who deal with the programming and the satellite aspects so we are looking for somebody from an IP networking and virtualisation background to come in and compliment these professionals, looking to make improvements and maximise profits.

The client supports around 3,500 ships for hardware and software products, based in 67 different countries and have 14 different currencies so many of these support issues involve dealing with non technical staff that do not have English as their first language. Part of the remit of this role will be helping to find ways to improve / support communications from the vessels they are on from SMS to instant messaging to phone calls etc.

You main duties will be to look in to future development, deal with the relatively small amount of ticket support backlog and look in to the future networking of the company. You must have:

* Strong IP networking design background.
* Strong virtual network / server skills
* Strong IP VPN
* Strong data comms based communication system and a track record of finding solutions and improving it where ever possible

Maritime or satellite experience is not essential as these skills are already in the company although it is essential you can offer IP network based expertise through to design / architect level to complement this existing team.

The salary for this is highly competitive with BUPA, 25 days holiday, pension and offers a relaxed working environment where you will be creating the future for not only this company but the industry itself. Some flexibility for travel will be required with this role but the position is based in the North East 90% of the time.
